Rolex Explorer II 16550 Cream
Introduce in 1984, the Rolex 16550 represent the transitional reference between the 1655 and the 16570 and it was only produced until 1989, making it an uncommon vintage Rolex to find. It brings some changes included the sapphire crystal, a caliber 3085 movement and a white dial in addition to the black dial model. The shape of the hands changed drastically as well, especially the 24 hour indicator which changed from a small red-orange arrow shaped hand to a long and sleek designed red 24 hour hand with a white arrow at the end. Aside from its rarity the watch we propose has several other details that would interest vintage Rolex collectors. First, its original white dial has actually turned into a light creamy shade due to a paint flaw. However, what started out as a flaw is now a scare aesthetic detail that is prized by collectors. Second, this dial is an example of a “rail” dial since the two “Cs” in “Chronometer” and “Certified” line up perfectly. And lastly, this specific Explorer II ref. 16550 is equipped with the original hard-to-find “fat font” bezel where the numerals are thicker than future bezels.
